5115!Cliff House Built in 1909, the present structure is the third on this site and was renovated in 2004. Its predecessor, a massively elaborate eight-story Victorian- Gothic castle that burned down in 1907, was built by the flamboy ant entrepreneur Adolph Sutro (his estate overlooking Cliff House is now Sutro Heights Park). Cliff House has restaurants on the upper levels, observation decks overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a new wing containing montague on the green two bars, a visitors montague on the green center, and the Camera Obscura. Joshua Abraham Norton Born in 1819, Norton made his fortune in San Francisco but lost it all in 1852. The event left him unhinged but harmless, and he declared montague on the green himself Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico. In 1969 Richard Oakes and 90 Native Americans landed on Alcatraz, set up camp, and demanded montague on the green the government montague on the green sell them the island for $24 worth of beads and red cloth. Sixty Native Americans remained, but as the stalemate dragged on, the majority slowly began to leave only 15 chose to stay. In June 1970, fires ravaged the warden s house, the recreation montague on the green hall, the officers club, and the lighthouse. Following this devastation, government montague on the green troops staged a pre-dawn raid. The remaining Indians were arrested and the 19-month Indian occupation came to an end.
